"Best of 2020" may seem like an oxymoron, still, Tovya had two projects on Best of 2020 lists:
- "American Dream Man"; Best Screenplays 2020, Austin Film Festival
- "Firebreaker"; Top-Ten Screenplays 2020, Branches Interactive
A reviewer at AFF called "American Dream Man" “a fascinating look into a musician's struggle” that “couldn’t be more poignant for today.” Desi Cooper was a popular jazz musician whose family learned that he was transgender only when he died. Desi lives a paradox: he proves his manliness by acting like any other 1950s chauvinist, he chases fame while terrified of being discovered, and all he wants is to be himself with a woman when he could never tell her the truth.
"Firebreaker" is a fully interactive mystery, organized like a "Choose Your Own Journey" book. A young lab tech caught in a game of cat-and-mouse after a break-in at a lab developing body-enhancing technology. The viewer's choices change the decisions of the lead character as she gets further embroiled in a dark underworld of technology and intrigue. Imagine a science-fiction Breaking Bad, where you make the choices.
Branches Interactive celebrated the success of the story's interactive structure, honoring "Firebreaker" as their pick for one of the best screenplays of the year.
